PssssST… A Litre of Light

Imagine you live in a township or slum, where all the houses are squashed together, and natural light is hard to see. Either you live in the dark, or you pay for costly kerosene or candles which you can probably ill afford.

Now, imagine that someone gave you a 1-litre used plastic drink bottle and a little bit of bleach, and said that this would bring you 50-60 watts of light for free! Yes it’s hard to believe, but well over 800 homes in the slums of the Philippines and Nairobi have been given the gift of light by these very things.

The water bottle is almost filled with water, then topped up with bleach. This is fixed into the roof of the home. The combination of water and bleach refracts the sunlight or moonlight into the room. Hey presto –light!
